An Empire Built on a Foundation of “Brick & Mopar”

Posted on: November 22, 2010 – 4:20 pm by Heather Heughens

Nov.17 Empire Mopars, New Windsor, N.Y. – Stop #4

New Windsor, New York – Pat and John Macioces’ love of all things Mopar began as stories like these often do – with their father. Ever since their dad told the boys that Chrysler made the best cars because, “They take technology everyone has and they make it better,” they’ve been taking classic Mopar vehicles and making them cleaner, leaner, faster and meaner… in some cases, over 1,000 horsepower meaner.

What began as a hobby in the early 1980s turned into a full-blown business venture for Pat and John once it became evident that expertise such as theirs was in high demand.

During a HEMI Highway Tour stop at Empire Auto Body, filled with Mopar bodies waiting to be returned to their former glory, we got a better idea as to just how much work goes into making that happen. The shop, just 10 miles away from the United States Military Academy at West Point and 65 miles north of New York City, is filled with Dodge, Chrysler and Plymouth vehicles in various stages of development, and John filled us in on the back story of each, and plans for completion.

During our visit, enthusiasts from all over the tri-state area brought their vintage beauties out for a day of show-and-tell. Standing next to their most prized possessions, each was beaming and eager to share the history of their vehicle and how it came to be the picture of muscle car perfection we saw before us.

And lucky for us, burn-outs were on the agenda for the day’s activities.

Pat offered some insight as to what made classic Mopar vehicles cooler than their competition at the time: “What I love about classic Mopar vehicles is the fact that Chrysler offered a performance version of nearly every one,” he said. “Even the so-called ‘economy’ vehicles of the era offered a souped-up sports package. Plus, no manufacturers had the high impact colors or unique stripe combination offered by Chrysler.”

Nowadays, Empire Mopars is responsible for some of the coolest true vehicle restorations, and some even cooler “resto-mods” – vehicles that appear stock, but pack some modern technologies both inside and out, and a few additional ponies. Then there’s the wild muscle machines that look intimidatingly fast even at a dead standstill – Empire Mopars makes those too!

As a matter of fact, nine out of ten of the vehicles they work on are classified as resto-mod, including Mopar Action Magazine’s Tech Editor Richard Ehrenberg’s 1969 Plymouth Valiant, a.k.a., “The Green Brick.”

Pat and Richard met shortly after the Brick got into a bit of a fender bender. Empire Mopars got the Brick back to good as new and the friendship between Richard Ehrenberg and the Macioce brothers was born.

A Mopar fanatic himself, Richard Ehrehberg has extremely high standards when it comes to where he takes his beloved vintage Mopars when they need a little TLC. For Richard, it’s Empire Auto Body. Perhaps it’s because, as Pat himself says, “We don’t do anything less than 100%. If our name is going to be on it, it has to be perfect.”

Perfection comes at a cost, but when you see the meticulous craftsmanship exhibited in Empire Auto Body’s work, you’ll agree – it’s worth every penny.

2011 Dodge Charger Revives Iconic Muscle Car Styling

Posted on: October 5, 2010 – 9:26 am by RLD

The 2011 Dodge Charger is now live, and our friends over at the Chrysler Blog have the inside scoop. Hit the jump for the full photo gallery and first official statement.

October 5, 2010 9:52 AM – In looking to the future, the designers at Dodge sought to recapture the past with the all-new 2011 Charger inspired by its iconic second generation 1960s ancestor.

Its iconic design is combined with modern features such as fastback four-door coupe proportions, world-class performance, craftsmanship and refinement, and state-of-the-art connectivity features.

The efficient and aerodynamic exterior of the 2011 Dodge Charger is sure to strike an emotional chord with Dodge performance enthusiasts of all generations.

Built at the Brampton Assembly Plant in Brampton, Ont., Canada, the 2011 Dodge Charger will rev up showrooms during the fourth quarter of 2010.

In the meantime, have a look at what you can expect:

* Meant to evoke the golden age of performance cars, the driver-centric design theme of the 2011 Dodge Charger’s interior cockpit is instantly brought to life by the new driver’s instrument-panel bezel. It showcases a seamless, billeted and highly detailed appearance that carries through the instrument cluster, center stack and center console. The 2011 Charger also features a new thick-rimmed three-spoke Dodge steering wheel for enhanced performance feel and grip.

* The 2011 Dodge Charger’s aluminum hood features dual scallops that bring a sculptured, performance look to the front end, while large body-side “scallops” deliver a striking A-line across the doors and hark back to the car’s high-performance heritage. The iconic horizontal “coke bottle” or “double-diamond” body-side styling runs front to rear is to create a tapering silhouette accented with muscular front and rear fenders. An all-new signature taillamp design that incorporates 164 illuminating LEDs to form its signature “racetrack” graphic is meant to define its fastback’s wide stance.

* Dodge Charger engineers were able to tune the cabin for sound quality (rather than sound level) by isolating powertrain, road and wind noise. In addition, Charger’s unibody packages material and structural design improvements including dual-pane acoustic windshield and front-door side glass, body-cavity silencing foam, under-flush roll-framed doors with triple seals and acoustic wheel-well liners to absorb road noise and quiet the cabin. Combined, these improvements should place the all-new Dodge Charger’s interior sound quality among the best in the E-segment. But, that’ll be up to you to decide.

* As the Dodge brand’s flagship, the chassis of the all-new 2011 Charger is designed, engineered and fine-tuned to deliver a level of quality, capability and refinement that rivals the very best European, Asian and North American E-segment sedans. With its new second-generation E-segment rear-wheel drive (RWD) architecture, Dodge Charger features world-class suspension-tunings designed to meet the high-performance handling needs along the world’s most fun-to-drive roads.

* Engineered to perform against the best E-segment sport sedans, the 2011 Dodge Charger SE and Charger Rallye feature a new 3.6-liter Pentastar engine. The legendary 5.7-liter HEMI™ V-8 engine with four-cylinder mode FuelSaver Technology also is included in the new Dodge Charger R/T lineup.

* The 2011 Dodge Charger R/T AWD features a segment-exclusive active transfer case and front-axle disconnect system to improve fuel economy by up to 5 percent. No other major automotive manufacturer offers the combination of these two independent technologies. Dodge Charger’s innovative AWD system seamlessly transitions between RWD and AWD with no driver intervention. When all-wheel drive is not required, the system automatically disconnects the front axle to maximize fuel economy while still providing the outstanding performance and handling inherent in rear-wheel drive vehicles.

* The 2011 Dodge Charger’s state-of-the-art Uconnect® Touch integrates world-class infotainment and convenience technologies to keep passengers connected, comfortable and secure. From segment-leading Garmin® navigation, to dual-zone climate controls and the ability to check fuel prices with the integration of available SIRIUS Travel Link, Uconnect Touch delivers an excellent experience for Charger driver and passengers.

* Finally, the new Dodge Charger includes more than 65 safety and security features, including: Standard Keyless Enter-N-Go and Electronic Stability Control (ESC) with segment-exclusive Ready-alert Braking and Rainy Day Brake Support safety to improve vehicle handling and performance. Safety and security features available for the first time on the Dodge Charger include adaptive-cruise control (ACC) with forward-collision warning (FCW, blind-spot monitoring (BSM) with rear cross path (RCP) detection and ParkView rear back-up camera with grid lines.

Jay Lightner’s Custom Muscle Earns High Praise at Spring Fest 5

Best_In_Show_5

Since its completion in August 2009, Jay Lightner’s 2007 Dodge Charger SRT8 has garnered over a dozen awards. It’s been recognized for everything from the sick sound system (Winner, DUB Best Dodge & Best Audio, 2009) to its flawlessly executed custom paint job (semi-finalist, SEMA Mother’s Shine Award 2009), but nothing means quite as much to Jay as this newest accolade. Explained Jay, “The car has now won 12 Best of Shows…When the maker of the car gives you recognition that is something you have to appreciate.”

Although his humility in the face of his numerous awards is admirable, don’t let it fool you – this car is every bit as deserving as you might suspect. Everything from stem to stern was painstakingly custom crafted, right down to the hand-stitched leather. Many, many different hands were involved in building Jay’s vehicle, but you couldn’t tell from the seamless, impeccable craftsmanship. The body itself was modified by LA-area specialist Topo Villafana and is actually the first full metal wide-body “suicide” Charger to be created, replete with 4.5” wide custom front fenders. The slick paint job was mixed, poured, and applied by Lucky 7 Customs in Antioch, California and the perfectly-matched 3-piece rims were specially forged by US Wheels. Inside, the black-on-burnt-orange theme is continued with a unique pattern designed by Jay’s wife, Alicia, and brought to life by Oakley, California-based shop, Tony’s Upholstery.

Beneath the custom hood liner, the snarling 6.1-liter HEMI® received a blindingly bright make-over, including polished Inertia heads, Super Spartan cam, polished Airhammer intake, one-off power steering tank, one-off Coolant tank, and a color-matched engine brace. A Diablo Predator tune and Megan coil-overs round-out the performance upgrades while Billet Technology badges tie the fearsome theme together.

Hit the jump to check out more pics of the masterpiece and be sure to leave some love for Jay!
