We know fuel mileage is on the minds of many motorists these days as gas prices seem to creep up like a rising tide. In the old days, you had to sacrifice and torque to get some decent MPGs when rolling down the road. However, now you can get the best of both worlds as our world class 3.6L V6 offers great with excellent fuel economy. This award winning engine is now available in our Avenger, Charger, Challenger, Durango, Grand Caravan and Journey and will make driving more fun without breaking your wallet every time you need to fill up. Check out the video below to hear what Drew Winter, editor at Ward’s Automotive had to say when they named it one of the Ten Best Engines for 2011. Challenger SRT8 Races to the Summit

Challenger DSC 1174 550x365 Challenger SRT8 Races to the Summit Spectre 341 Challenge Nevada 2010 Dodge Challenger SRT8 392 challenger models photo

Cars tuned and tweaked to perfection have their place on the battlefield. Come race day a competitive driver wants to know that every detail of his vehicle has been looked over; every adjustment made, in hopes of yielding the most aggressive results. This was the case for the majority of the drivers during the Spectre 341 Challenge — a 5.2-mile open road race on Nevada State Highway 341 complete with 22 turns, 1,200+ feet of elevation change, and only a few guardrails. But what of the car and driver that comes to compete, free of modifications?

One such pair made its way to this desert playground, and left making 341 history. Kevin Wesley drove a stock 2011 Dodge Challenger SRT8 392 and aggressively pushed a 3:39.9 on his second run. Not only did this earn him a spot in the 3:41 Club, but also making him the fastest competitor in an unmodified vehicle – and did we mention the Challenger was equipped with an automatic transmission! Kevin is proud to again prove that Dodge produces vehicles that leave the line with as much intensity and performance as their European rivals. Kudos to you, Kevin.

Dodge and MasterCard® Become Drafting Partners!

Posted on: July 4, 2011 – 11:00 am by RLD

Dodge MasterCard image 550x161 Dodge and MasterCard® Become Drafting Partners! mopar Mastercard lifestyle photo

In our 21st century society, everything from a café latte to gas to home furnishings can be transacted with a swipe of a card. Now with the new Dodge MasterCard®, you can show the checkout clerk your stripes and let them know how you roll.

What’s even better is you can redeem points for a myriad of ® Accessories to personalize your Dodge ride or use those points for services such as oil changes and tire rotations at your local dealership. If your Dodge is already ‘dialed-in’, you may also redeem the points for travel, merchandise and even gift cards. You can also use these points toward the purchase of any new Dodge vehicle, something to think about if you’ve been on the fence about purchasing that new ‘Green With Envy’ Challenger R/T to show off at the local cruise nights.

Here’s the low down – if you sign up, you can earn three points for every $1 spent on purchases at the participating dealerships, two points for travel-related purchases, and one point for all other purchases. The associated benefits offered by the card make it one of the finest in the industry with no cap on reward point earning or redemption.

So when you reach for the card, you can start earning points for some great gear such as Cat-Back Exhaust System or Cold-Air Intake for your HEMI® Charger. Or if you like, a romantic weekend getaway with a loved one – matching bathrobes and scented candles included!

If you’re interested, head over to your local dealership or apply online at www.dodgecard.com.  You will receive an instant decision once you apply. Another bonus is there is no annual fee and offers Chrysler Group customers a competitive annual percentage rate.

2011 Dodge Challenger Rallye

Posted on: June 22, 2011 – 11:01 am by RLD

Challenger Rallye 550x342 2011 Dodge Challenger Rallye Dodge Challenger Rallye 3.6L Pentastar V6 challenger models photo

Imagine: You’re tearing down the highway, the sweet sound of the engine humming and gently fading into the background noise. You sink deeper into the race-inspired seats, allowing the rumble of the 3.6L Pentastar V6 from its chrome tipped dual exhaust to send chills up your spine. The power is, well… powerful. You’re zipping along, jumping from 0-60 in a mere six seconds—power more typical of a V8 than a V6. You brake, just to test your capability, and again your faithful steed doesn’t disappoint, stopping on a dime effortlessly. Where did this endurance come from? What car brand was able to squeeze that amount of power out of a V6? And the most important question: Where can you get one?

Muscle-car enthusiasts needn’t look too far when selecting a vehicle that boasts power, maneuverability, fair gas mileage, and devilish good looks. We here at the Dodge brand team have done it yet again, manipulating the ever-popular Dodge Challenger Rallye to create something with even more might. The Rallye has all the looks and power of your Dad’s muscle car, but includes the accouterments and safety features of a modern ride.  Nothing has been left out, from the optional 20-inch aluminum chrome-clad wheels or the standard six speaker Boston Acoustics system with a 276 watt amp to the Bluetooth capability and available navigation system. It’s all there, just waiting for you.

For 2011 the Rallye puts all other muscle wannabees to shame as it vaunts 305 horsepower; a whopping 55 more horsepower than the previous model. Not only is the Rallye vivacious inside and underhood, but the race-inspired exterior, complete with available racing stripes and a menacing front-end, begs someone, anyone who dares to give chase.

And yet, even with all the strength the Dodge Challenger Rallye harnesses, your insurance agent will still give you a nod of approval—all the power of a V8 at the price of a V6. So, we ask, what’s not to love—can you find anything?

Dodge Girls Do Have More Fun!

Posted on: June 10, 2011 – 1:28 pm by RLD

Elena Scheer 001 550x366 Dodge Girls Do Have More Fun! Hotchkis Sport Suspension Holley Edelbrock BF Goodrich Firm Feel Elana Scherr 1970 Dodge Challenger challenger models photo

Elana Scherr is an automotive PR professional who resides in Los Angles. Her daily responsibilities include developing and initiating strategic communication programs at Kahn Media for host of clients including major players in the high-performance aftermarket business. However, this attractive 33 year doesn’t sit behind a desk all day working on power point presentations and crafting press releases. On the contrary, Elana can be found mixing it up with the boys at the drag strips and autocross tracks throughout the southwest in her big-block powered 1970 Dodge Challenger.

She had been driving her Challenger for about three years when she applied for a position at Kahn Media. The folks there were quite impressed with her hands-on knowledge and passion for cars. The funny thing is, the interview went from the office to the parking lot where she showed Mr. Kahn her Challenge. To this day Elana joking claims “Mr. Kahn hired the car instead of me!”

As Elana puts it, “working at Kahn Media is a blast. I get to write about cars, hang out with car people and attend lots of racing and automotive events. Along with drag racing, I’ve been learning autocross. It’s really a good feeling to see people’s mouths drop open when a big muscle car takes a turn at speed.”

Elana’s Challenger is no show poodle or full blown racer car that has to be strapped down on a trailer to get to events. Instead, this is her daily driver that has been updated to deal with commuting in the 21st century. It also makes frequent visits to all kinds of racing venues and therefore she added new technology to improve the car’s street and race behavior. Elana updated the cooling system, brakes and suspension. Things like a Firm Feel Stage II steering box makes the 3800 lb. E-Body easier to maneuver and the Hotchkis Sport Suspension TVS kit makes the Challenger handle more nimble on the street and on autocross tracks. What’s nice about these modifications is they don’t detract from the Challenger’s already gorgeous lines and appearance. That’s another reason why Elana runs the era correct factory 15X7 Rallye wheels with BF Goodrich rubber on all four corners. She also wanted the car to look “low key” and therefore kept the factory flat hood and refrained from cloning into some high-impact colored, shaker hood wearing, bumble bee striped R/T poser.

Under the hood, a very mild 440 Magnum resides in place of the original 318. It received subtle upgrades such an Edelbrock dual-plane intake, Holley 750 CFM carburetor, MSD ignition and TTI headers. Not only do these enhancements improve the horsepower and torque, but also help make it tolerate the 92 octane unleaded pump gas. The venerable Wedge is hooked up to a 727 Torqueflite automatic transmission and the factory 8 ¾ axle spins a 3.91 ratio.  This combination has propelled Elana’s Challenger to a 12.42 ET at almost 109 mph in the quarter mile

Both the car and the engine have fairly detailed histories. Elana purchased the Challenger from the original owner, who had bought it for his wife and used it to tow their boat. The engine in the car is a re-ring originally out of a Chrysler New Yorker. When putting the 440 back together, she met her future boyfriend Tom Yeager and he agreed to help reassemble the engine on a stand in her living room. “I guess that made him think I was somewhat appealing” laughs Elana! The 440 has served her well as it has been in two different Challengers and still retains the stock cam with over 100,000 miles on it.

With numerous road trips to Las Vegas and San Francisco along with the daily grind of the LA freeway systems, the paint on Challenger is not perfect and the body has a few nasty parking lot bruises but the pleasure of driving the car far outweighs the negatives. After all, she built it once and can do it again and that’s why Dodge Girls have more fun!

Announcing the “HEMI Heritage Shootout Series”

The LX & Beyond Nationals has always been and will continue to be about the Modern Mopar and performance vehicles of the 21st century and celebrating the rebirth of the muscle car era that has been sparked by the innovation and pioneering vision of the designers and engineers at Chrysler Group LLC.

We also recognize and appreciate where the DNA of many of our favorite modern Mopars came from and why the names “Dodge Charger” and “Dodge Challenger” immediately spark thoughts of a famous Hemi Orange car jumping thru the air to avoid being captured by an also famous sheriff, or an Alpine White car racing from Colorado to be delivered to San Francisco.

This year we are adding the “HEMI Heritage Shootout Series” to the racing events of the LX & Beyond Nationals. All 1966-1978 (B-body) first generation Dodge Charger and 1970-1974 (E-platform) first generation Dodge Challenger vehicles, all engines (must be Mopar-powered) and all trim styles are welcome. We look forward to celebrating the beginning and the future of the Mopar muscle car era at Quaker City Motorsports Park on July 16-17, 2011. Race details will be posted later this week on www.lxandbeyondnats.com

The Marketing of Speed and Horsepower

Posted on: May 12, 2011 – 2:34 pm by RLD

1966 HEMI Charger ad 404x550 The Marketing of Speed and Horsepower By Geoff Stunkard R/T NASCAR magnum Madison Avenue HEMI Geoff Stunkard Freedom Dart charger challenger charger models photo

The automotive world has changed a great deal in the 50 years since the muscle car era. Madison Avenue is no longer dominated by a male culture, the average lunch no longer mandates three Manhattans’ or other high-octane concoctions once referred to as ‘brown water’. We’d like to think that everything is a little more gentle than it once was. The truth be told is that the musclecar business was never, has never, and will never be a bastion of political correctness. You either had the need for speed, or you didn’t and on that merit alone, it was always sort of ‘us versus them.’

A name like denoted speed and aggression; not for the namby-pamby set. Adding R/T to it meant you had bought power to match the name. For the chosen ones, the car names rolled our tongues off easy enough –, Dart, . They denoted something that was not passé, something guaranteed to be more than a pedestrian walk down the boulevard. Sure, nobody really knew what a Polara or Monaco was, and those names subsequently faded away. But a Coronet denoted the torrid era of jazz, Swinger was slang for a certain type of fast and easy lifestyle, and Demon, well, that title spoke for itself. Then you could put some initials on it – R/T for Road / Track, GTS for Gran Turismo Sport, T/A for Trans Am and on it went. The names were not for the faint of heart, and were badges worn with honor at the local drive-in.

Then there were the engines – Magnum, Six Pack, , Max Wedge, Ramcharger. One early variety was a race six cylinder called a Hyper Pak; again, not the stoic motivation that took your mom down to the grocery store. Nope, these were engines that often right came from the factory with chrome and high-lift camshafts. You ended up at the gas station (sometimes more often then you wanted), showing everyone in walking distance what was under the hood. You didn’t have to ask them to look, either; once that hood was open, they’d just show up to scope it out.

The dealerships would use whatever incentives they could find to get people to come in and check them all out. It was the Lively Set, then the Hot Ones, the Dodge Rebellion, the White Hat Guys, and Dodge Fever, Dodge Material, and the Scat Pack. Sure, there were thousands upon thousands of non-performance cars that came out at the same time, but marketing the excitement of performance was a huge part of selling them as well. The idea was to use that excitement to put someone into a similarly-styled 318 Charger, or slant six Dart, or Coronet station wagon.

Hiring winning drivers like Dick Landy, Don Garlits, David Pearson, and Buddy Baker led to notoriety on the sports pages as well. It was a big deal during this time period to have a ‘win on Sunday, sell on Monday’ mentality. Most manufacturers pushed the sanctioning bodies for favorable rules, and built cars to meet the needs. In the first part of the 1969 model run, there was a semi-sleek Charger 500, and that was followed up after a close-but-no-cigar effort in Florida that winter with a radically-restyled Charger called the Daytona (named for the race), with a pointed nose and skyscraper deck wing.

We still like to have fun marketing musclecars. Our Chargers and Challengers still run the high-banks of and NHRA strips. Our current batch of TV spots and prints speak of the passion, performance and the spirit that drives us. And who could forget our now infamous Challenger Freedom TV spot?

Here our future president George Washington and his worn band of patriots route a regiment of British Redcoats by a trio of black Challengers SRT8s.
