Vintage Dodge muscle was swarming around one of America’s most magnificent estates this past weekend during the annual EyesOn Design car show. Held on the majestic grounds of the Edsel and Eleanor Ford House in Grosse Pointe Shores, Michigan, classic and iconic vehicles were “invited” to this show based on their unique and avant-garde design and styling features from the era.

Among the Bugattis, Duesenbergs, Packards and other classics from virtually every decade, the EyesOn Design committee recognized the role muscle cars played in the automotive landscape and American Pop Culture. Three generations of Chargers, including a rare 1971 HEMI®-powered R/T “survivor” were represented, along with a 1971 Challenger R/T and a 1972 Dodge Demon 340. Over 4,000 classic car lovers came through the gates on Father’s Day to see the vast array of historical vehicles.

All of the gate proceeds went to the Detroit Institute of Ophthalmology, an internationally-recognized non-profit which accelerates the development of “artificial vision,” technology which will one day allow some blind and visually impaired persons to regain the vision to see the world around them, including the design of automobiles.

So if you’re in the Detroit area next Father’s day, make sure to save the day and take your dad to a show you’ll both enjoy.

Dodge and scored big time last weekend during the 42ND annual SuperNationals held at Old Bridge Raceway Park in Englishtown New Jersey. In the Pro Stock class, it was an all Dodge Mopar-powered  final as Allen Johnson drove his Mopar-sponsored machine to victory over rookie sensation Vincent Nobile who was competing at his home track.

Both drivers qualified solidly in the 16 car field.  Allen was number six and Vincent was eighth – putting the two Dodge drivers on the opposite side of the elimination ladder. Both Allen and Vincent faced some tough competitors along the way to the final round.  Vincent runs a Roy Johnson prepared Mopar under the hood and had plenty of power to win. When the two Avengers lined up for finals, it was anyone’s guess on who would bring home the check and the coveted ‘Wally”. Unfortunately it was over immediately for Vincent when he shaved the “Christmas Tree” a little too close and red lighted by  – 0.006. Allen was loaded for bear and had a great reaction time of 0.013 and ran a stout 6.689 at over 210 mph for the win.

“We know we have to show up every weekend – ready to race. Once at the track, weather, track conditions, the car and the competition all must factor into the final tune.  It is a testament to the program that we were able to get two Mopar HEMI-powered Dodge Avengers into the finals this past weekend.  I play many roles from team owner to driver to mentor.  I can’t really say which gives me greater pleasure given this weekend’s win” , said Allen.

This is Allen’s first win of the season and ninth overall career win in the highly competitive Pro Stock class. This weekend’s win moves him up to seventh in the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Points.

The next stop for hard charging Mopar-Powered Dodge Avengers Pro Stockers will be Bristol Dragway (which is home base for Allen Johnson’s team ) for the 11th annual NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals on June 17 – 19.

The Marketing of Speed and Horsepower

The automotive world has changed a great deal in the 50 years since the muscle car era. Madison Avenue is no longer dominated by a male culture, the average lunch no longer mandates three Manhattans’ or other high-octane concoctions once referred to as ‘brown water’. We’d like to think that everything is a little more gentle than it once was. The truth be told is that the musclecar business was never, has never, and will never be a bastion of political correctness. You either had the need for speed, or you didn’t and on that merit alone, it was always sort of ‘us versus them.’

A name like denoted speed and aggression; not for the namby-pamby set. Adding R/T to it meant you had bought power to match the name. For the chosen ones, the car names rolled our tongues off easy enough –, Dart, . They denoted something that was not passé, something guaranteed to be more than a pedestrian walk down the boulevard. Sure, nobody really knew what a Polara or Monaco was, and those names subsequently faded away. But a Coronet denoted the torrid era of jazz, Swinger was slang for a certain type of fast and easy lifestyle, and Demon, well, that title spoke for itself. Then you could put some initials on it – R/T for Road / Track, GTS for Gran Turismo Sport, T/A for Trans Am and on it went. The names were not for the faint of heart, and were badges worn with honor at the local drive-in.

Then there were the engines – Magnum, Six Pack, , Max Wedge, Ramcharger. One early variety was a race six cylinder called a Hyper Pak; again, not the stoic motivation that took your mom down to the grocery store. Nope, these were engines that often right came from the factory with chrome and high-lift camshafts. You ended up at the gas station (sometimes more often then you wanted), showing everyone in walking distance what was under the hood. You didn’t have to ask them to look, either; once that hood was open, they’d just show up to scope it out.

The dealerships would use whatever incentives they could find to get people to come in and check them all out. It was the Lively Set, then the Hot Ones, the Dodge Rebellion, the White Hat Guys, and Dodge Fever, Dodge Material, and the Scat Pack. Sure, there were thousands upon thousands of non-performance cars that came out at the same time, but marketing the excitement of performance was a huge part of selling them as well. The idea was to use that excitement to put someone into a similarly-styled 318 Charger, or slant six Dart, or Coronet station wagon.

Hiring winning drivers like Dick Landy, Don Garlits, David Pearson, and Buddy Baker led to notoriety on the sports pages as well. It was a big deal during this time period to have a ‘win on Sunday, sell on Monday’ mentality. Most manufacturers pushed the sanctioning bodies for favorable rules, and built cars to meet the needs. In the first part of the 1969 model run, there was a semi-sleek Charger 500, and that was followed up after a close-but-no-cigar effort in Florida that winter with a radically-restyled Charger called the Daytona (named for the race), with a pointed nose and skyscraper deck wing.

We still like to have fun marketing musclecars. Our Chargers and Challengers still run the high-banks of and NHRA strips. Our current batch of TV spots and prints speak of the passion, performance and the spirit that drives us. And who could forget our now infamous Challenger Freedom TV spot?

The Duke Boys Get Shut Down!

Posted on: March 17, 2011 – 7:00 am by RLD

Bo and Luke may have no problem outrunning Sheriff Roscoe Coltrane’s Monaco police cruiser but they finally met their match. Our friends at Edmunds.com pitted the big-block powered General Lee against the new 2011 Charger R/T. Even though the General Lee packs 440 cubic inches which allows it to fly higher and jump further, it was no match for its younger offspring on the asphalt. Our new Charger R/T was quicker in 0-60 and quarter-mile times and its highly tuned suspension and brakes give it an advantage over its B-Body ancestor when “running from the law”. Now, imagine the trouble the Duke boys could have caused in Hazzard County if they had a new 370 HEMI® Charger R/T.

Check out the video for all the tire smoking excitement!

‘Snowpocalypse’ – No Match For The HEMI® Charger R/T AWD

With the Northeast getting hammered by the relentless ‘Snowpocalypse’, our friends at the New England Motor Press Association (NEMPA), awarded the 2011 Charger R/T AWD with their coveted Winter Vehicle Award in the $25,000 to $35,000 sedan/wagon price class. This group of automotive journalist’s covers a large section of the country – mainly all six New England states that contain one of the largest populations in the United States. Therefore, when these guys test new vehicles, they look well beyond the usual 0-60 and quarter mile times to gauge the cars performance. These writers evaluate the vehicle in everyday “real world” conditions that includes the harsh, brutal and sometimes treacherous winter driving conditions that are prevalent in their region of the country.

Charger is a great looking car with a high-quality interior,” said John Paul, Winter Vehicle Awards Team Leader — NEMPA. “Add in its dedicated all-wheel-drive system, and the Charger feels like it was designed just for New England winters. Oh and by the way, it has a Hemi!

The ultra cool Charger AWD system features a unique active transfer case and front axle disconnect system which allows seamless engagement between rear-wheel drive to AWD. Therefore when a ‘Nor’easter’ comes out of nowhere, the system will automatically engage to the changing weather and road conditions. Therefore, you no longer need to worry about what mother nature throws at you. On dry pavement, the system automatically disconnects the front axle to increase fuel economy. Think of this as having your cake and eating it too.

“When designing the all-new Charger R/T AWD, the team pushed the fastback sedan’s capabilities further, delivering a highly capable and precise all-season performance street weapon that thrives in any ‘Snowpocolypse,” said our President and CEO Ralph Gilles. “With its state-of-the-art AWD system combined with a new world-class chassis, best-in-class horsepower, the all-new Charger R/T AWD is designed to deliver performance and grip even during one of the harshest of winters this country has seen in years.”

Now if that darn ground hog had only seen his shadow, we could have had six more weeks of fun winter driving in our Charger R/T AWD!

Video: Hey Charger! The Aussie’s Six-Pack HEMI Valiant Charger

by Robert Kibbe on February 17, 2011

In the early 197o’s the muscle car era in the U.S. was dying a quick and painful death. Government safety and emissions legislation, rising insurance rates, and skyrocketing fuel prices all combined to kill what many still regard as the golden era of automotive performance. 1971 would be the last year a 426 HEMI would slide under the hood of an American Dodge Charger, but down under, the HEMI Charger was just getting started!

More specifically, the Valiant-based Australian Charger would have a unique look and an even more unique 6-cylinder Weber-fed HEMI under the hood. The Australian ad campaign was targeted on people shouting and, in some cases, purring the phrase, “Hey Charger!”

The 1971 model introduced the “VH” series of Chrysler-branded Valiant Chargers featured a short wheelbase and a fastback roofline. It immediately attracted the praise of the press and won the Wheels Magazine “Car of the Year” award. Further praise was heaped on by the Australian Motoring News describing it as  “the most handsome car Chrysler has ever produced, and probably the best looking car ever produced by an Australian manufacturer.”

It came in four different variants with the standard Charger sporting a 215 cubic inch six cylinder, the Charger XL with the 245 cubic inch six-banger and the lauded R/T and 770 hot-shot versions and featured the 265 cubic inch HEMI engine.

The HEMI engine itself came in a few different flavors based on which model of Charger it was in. The E37 Charger was the original HEMI offering and made 218 horsepower. It was quickly followed by the higher horsepower E38 280 horsepower motor, though both were considered street engines and were equipped with 3-speed manual or automatic transmissions.

The E39 was offered in 1972 and was the real race motor. It featured a trio of Webers mounted to a short intake, officially making for the only Six-Pack optioned HEMI, and had a compression ratio of 10.5:1, good for a stout 302 horsepower. The E39 4-speed equipped Chargers could run the quarter-mile in 14.40 making it the quickest quarter-mile machine ever built in Australia! It had a reputation for embarrassing the V8 GM Holdens and Ford Falcons.

1972 also marked the model year of the Charger 770 “SE” edition that featured a small block 340. The SE was an extremely rare car and only 770 were produced. Surprisingly, all cars came equipped with a single pipe exhaust and the 727 Torqueflite transmission.

In 1973 the reign of the Valiant Charger VH ended, and the redesigned VJ series entered. It featured changes to the cowl, grille, lighting and rear quarter feature panel, with round headlights replacing the previous rectangular units. A street HEMI engine was still available from the old E37 package, but was now referred to as E48 and featured an upgraded 4-speed transmission. The uber-hot E39 race HEMI was gone.

The Charger R/T itself was also gone forever, a decision which was linked to the fact that Chrysler had officially withdrawn from participation in Australian touring car racing at the end of the 1972 season.

The upscale Charger 770 VJ series continued to offer a small block V8 in the 1973 and ’74 model year, though the “SE” model was dropped entirely. A small block 360 came into the mix in late 1974 for the Charger 770 and in the Charger was restyled again as the VK series for the 1975 model year. At this point, but the HEMI was gone entirely and Charger production ended after 1978.

We love the video of old automotive ads in general, but this one is something special. To begin with, simply being Australian gives it a charm in it’s own right. There is certainly sexual innuendo in some portions, but by today’s standards it’s pretty tame. We’re confident that be the end you’ll be grinning. Be aware though, it will take you a week to get the phrase “Hey Charger!” out of your head.

R/T, More Than Just A Badge!

Posted on: February 11, 2011 – 8:54 am by RLD

The R/T nameplate has as much heritage to the brand as HEMI®. Both equally resonate among passionate enthusiasts all over the globe. First introduced in 1967 on the Coronet model, the R/T package was much more than just flashy wheels and some badges plastered all over the bodywork. Short for “Road” and “Track”, the engineers and product planners did their homework and when the R/T made its debut. Instead of going with the sedate 383, the team insisted on making sure the new 375 horsepower 440 Magnum V8 was under the hood as standard equipment (the 426 HEMI was optional for buyers looking to take no prisoners on the drag strip). The R/T package also included a heavy duty suspension, performance tires and an upgraded cooling system. Aspen but the heart and soul was not there as the ground pounding big-block Wedge and HEMI engines were not to be found in the option guides. The R/T nameplate would reappear in the 1990′s on the Neon and Stealth but it would take another decade to find its rightful place among gear heads looking for a rear-wheel drive performance car.

Fast forward to 2006 and the R/T package is reunited with an old friend, the Charger. And just like the glory days of the past, the Charger R/T was powered by the next generation HEMI displacing 5.7 liters and pushing out well over 300 horsepower. With the introduction of the 2009 Challenger R/T, the HEMI received a bump to 370 horsepower. Our product team even developed the “Classic” edition that included a 1971 inspired “R/T” stripes and high-impact colors. This year, the infamous R/T package will be available on the 2011 Durango, Grand Caravan, and Journey. And like its predecessors of the late 1960′s, it will carry the same DNA with great drive train, refined suspension, unique wheel and tire packages and an aggressive style that is distinctively
.

By 1968, the R/T packaged was available on the second generation Charger and when the Challenger was introduced in 1970, buyers could purchase an R/T model with a wide variety of engines and options. With the changing consumer tastes due to high insurance rates going through the stratosphere for performance vehicles and with the infamous oil embargo, the R/T nameplate met a lowly demise and quietly slipped away by 1972. It resurfaced momentarily in the late 1970′s on the

2012 Charger SRT8 – Stronger, Faster, Smarter

Posted on: February 9, 2011 – 10:20 am by RLD

Today at the Chicago Auto Show, Dodge will reveal the new 2012 Charger SRT8 to a crowd of automotive journalists from around the globe.

Hot on heels of the 2011 Challenger SRT8 392, the rubber on the pavement has hardly had a chance to cool with today’s announcement of the 2012 Charger SRT8. This further reinforces the Dodge name as a performance brand.

So with that being said, let’s get into the juicy details of the 2012 Dodge Charger SRT8. Under the hood is the new 6.4-liter HEMI® V-8 with an estimated 465 horsepower and 465 lb.-ft. of torque (the SRT gear heads aren’t quite done tweaking). What makes this even better is the standard Fuel Saver Technology (four-cylinder mode) on the 6.4-liter HEMI that will improve fuel efficiency over the previous model. Other internal goodies include a high-lift camshaft and active intake manifold that will provide increased low-end torque along with more top-end power. Our SRT engineers are able to achieve this by altering the runner length inside the manifold based on engine speed.

For the first time in any Chrysler Group LLC SRT product, standard paddle shift technology joins the standard AutoStick on the floor shifter on the 2012 Charger SRT8. Both will be mated to the proven W5A580 five-speed automatic transmission and both shifting techniques will allow the driver to have some fun going through the gearbox but the performance calibrated transmission controller will help keep you out of the red line.

The new Charger SRT8 also received a makeover in the ride and handling department. An adaptive damping suspension takes driver inputs and will automatically tune the suspension for specific conditions. For those of you looking to shrink time and distance, a “Sport” setting is available while the “Auto” setting may be appropriate for those morning commutes.

From a styling standpoint, the Charger SRT8 will stand out among its cousins. With its aggressive front and rear fascias, a new rear spoiler and a sculptured hood complete with 6.4L HEMI badges, the folks in the lane next to you will quickly know what you’re all about.

The interior also gets massaged as a new leather-wrapped SRT exclusive steering wheel and carbon-weave, fiber aluminum trim pieces. The front seats will have an aggressive bolstering to help keep you in place when you take your ride to an SRT Track Experience. Speaking of performance driving, the new instrument panel display can be customized to include instant driver feedback such as 0-60 mph and quarter-mile times along with g-forces and much more with the exclusive performance section.

Look for the 2012 Dodge Charger SRT8 to arrive in your dealer showrooms later this year.
