All Eyes on the Dodge Scat Pack!

Vintage Dodge muscle was swarming around one of America’s most magnificent estates this past weekend during the annual EyesOn Design car show. Held on the majestic grounds of the Edsel and Eleanor Ford House in Grosse Pointe Shores, Michigan, classic and iconic vehicles were “invited” to this show based on their unique and avant-garde design and styling features from the era.

Among the Bugattis, Duesenbergs, Packards and other classics from virtually every decade, the EyesOn Design committee recognized the role muscle cars played in the automotive landscape and American Pop Culture. Three generations of Chargers, including a rare 1971 HEMI®-powered R/T “survivor” were represented, along with a 1971 Challenger R/T and a 1972 Dodge Demon 340. Over 4,000 classic car lovers came through the gates on Father’s Day to see the vast array of historical vehicles.

All of the gate proceeds went to the Detroit Institute of Ophthalmology, an internationally-recognized non-profit which accelerates the development of “artificial vision,” technology which will one day allow some blind and visually impaired persons to regain the vision to see the world around them, including the design of automobiles.

So if you’re in the Detroit area next Father’s day, make sure to save the day and take your dad to a show you’ll both enjoy.

Tough Weekend for Kurt Busch and Dodge at Michigan

For the fourth consecutive week, a R/T led the field to green in the Sprint Cup Series.  ’s continued his torrid four-week stretch by earning his third straight and 15th-career pole position for Sunday’s HELUVA GOOD! Sour Cream Dips 400 at Michigan International Speedway.

Success at the two-mile oval in Irish Hills is simple, have a race car that handles well on long green-flag runs.  Cautions flags are traditionally rare as horsepower is trumped by a well-handling race car.  Track position is king.  Unfortunately, finding that right balance on the slick race track proved to be the undoing for the Dodge Boys.

Hoping to capitalize on early track position, Busch struggled finding the right setup on his / Dodge Charger.  Despite never racing outside of the top 10 for the first 198 of the 200-lap race, Busch’s car seesawed from ‘loose’ to ‘tight’.  Finding the happy medium was a struggle.

“A really up and down day for us,” Busch said.  “It’s always tough when you earn a pole position and can’t take advantage of it during the race.  Our Shell/Pennzoil Dodge Charger was just too inconsistent today to contend for a race win.  We were a solid top-10 race car, but just couldn’t get (it) dialed in enough to run with the leaders.  We ran 198 laps inside the top 10, finished 11th after getting nudged out on that last restart.  It was really a seesaw day for us.”

Mechanical grip was the major issue for the 2004 series champion.  A solid top-10 car for nearly the entire race, Busch and crew chief Steve Addington used multiple air pressure, track bar and wedge adjustments searching for the right combination.

“It seemed like our car would be good for the first five laps of a green flag run, and then once the track would rubber-in, we would run tight,” Busch added.  “Our first lap was awesome; the last 199 were a challenge.  You have to be rock-solid on these two-mile race tracks.  You need a good race car, solid pit stops and good changes to keep up with the track and we just were too inconsistent today.  A solid points day for us and that’s important in the big picture.”

With his 11th-place finish, Busch dropped one position to seventh in the Sprint Cup driver standings – 41 points behind the leader.

Looking for his second win in four Sprint Cup races, Michigan-native turned a poor qualifying effort into early race motivation.   Starting 41st, he gained 21 positions and raced his Miller Lite Dodge Charger into the top 20 by lap 15.  Unfortunately for the recent Kansas winner, a fast race car didn’t multiply into race results.

Running 18th, Keselowski brought out the race’s third-caution on lap 81 when he blew a right-front tire after making contact with the outside retaining wall.  The incident dropped Keselowski 13 positions for the restart on Lap 89.  With the loss of track position and a damaged front-splitter, Keselowski could only manage to run as high as 21st position, fell a lap down, took a wave around on the race’s final caution on lap 192 and finished 25th.

“Obviously we had a poor qualifying effort that forced us to start at the rear of the field,” said Keselowski.  “Once the green flag flew, our Miller Lite Dodge was a rocket.  We were able to make our way up the field and raced as high as 18th.  I was just trying to move around on the race track, trying to get us to where we needed to be.  I just pushed too hard and hit the wall and that led to a flat tire that totally changed our day. It’s tough and this track and race means so much to me.  I really wanted to have good run and we just didn’t make it happen today.  It was just one of those days where it didn’t matter what we did, we were going to have a bad day.  We’ll just keep working at it.”

Our Dodge boys will head back to the shop and regroup before heading to Infineon Raceway in California for the next stop on the grueling 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup schedule.

Dodge Through the Decades – The Roaring 20’s!

Dodge Brother show 550x427 Dodge Through the Decades – The Roaring 20’s! Hamtramck Dodge brothers features photo

As America recovered from World War One, the growing automobile industry began to take shape. Technology began to makes its way among all the manufacturers. Dodge capitalized on what it had learned building scout cars for the U.S. Army and the punishment they endured on the European battlefields and applied those great rugged attributes to civilian vehicles. In 1920, it was this durability that really solidified Dodge’s reputation for dependability and propelled the brand to the number two spot United States by producing over 141,000 vehicles.

Sadly, 1920 also marked the passing of Horace and John Dodge who had both contracted the flu that eventually turned into pneumonia. John succumbed to his illness on January 14 while Horace, who never stopped grieving over the loss of his brother, passed on December 11 of that same year. After the death of Horace, the company was administered by Frederick J. Haynes who assumed the role of president. Under his tenure, Dodge would ride out the rocky postwar recession and continue with strong sales. Wall Street took notice and the company was sold to the investment group Dillon, Read and Co. on April 30, 1925 for $146 million.

Some notable innovations to come out this era were upgraded chassis, suspension and semi-floating rear axles all designed to improve ride quality and durability. Also, Dodge was first to use an all-steel body starting on the 1923 models. Comfort and safety features like in-car heaters, full-width front seats and standard rear brake lights brought new customers into the showrooms. There was also more emphasis on styling as wrap around fenders, lowered roof lines and steel disc wheels appeared on many models during these years. From a performance standpoint, four-cylinder engines began to wane and Dodge would produce three different levels of its new “Victory Six” that developed 60-67 horsepower. The first downdraft carburetor was also introduced which increased throttle response and power.

Before the decade was up, Dodge had cranked out over 2 million vehicles from its Hamtramck Michigan plant. Its production capacity along with great sales and solid reputation caught the attention of Walter P. Chrysler. He had been eyeing Dodge for quite some time and believed the brand would augment the more luxurious and somewhat pricey Chrysler vehicles. On July 31, 1928, Chrysler purchased Dodge for $170 million. As the 1920s slowly drew to a close, no one could predict what was looming on the horizon. A crisis of epic proportion would soon send the entire auto industry along with the world economy into a massive tailspin.

We’ll examine how Dodge survived the turbulent 1930s and the Great Depression next week on Red Letter Dodge.

An Original General Lee Goes to Auction

Many of you know Jalen Rose as one of basketballs greatest players. From his college days at Michigan as one of the infamous “Fab Five” to his 13-year professional NBA career with the Denver Nuggets and Indiana Pacers. He was a natural athlete on the hardwood floors and his style would influence future players.

After he left the court he became an ESPN/ABC studio analyst along with hosting many NBA related shows. He also wanted to give back to the community and begun working on the Jalen Rose Leadership Academy which is slated to open in September of this year. The JRLA is a grade 9-12 college-prep charter high school in Northwest . Its mission is to provide leadership and a focused experience within a high-performing environment that engages and inspires youth.  The structure is very rigorous and its goal is to give the students the tools they need to prepare them for a college degree.

Jalen’s so committed to see his dream become a reality that he will auction up his prized 1969 Dodge Charger General Lee on eBay.  This is not a replica but one of the few Chargers that survived the numerous chases, jumps and crashes from the famed TV show The Dukes of Hazzard. Jalen made to some minor cosmetic tweaks to the car and removed the Confederate flag from the roof and changed the numbers on the doors to “05″ in honor of his playing number. Bo Duke himself, John Schneider and Jalen autographed the underside of the hood.

“The ‘General Lee’ is one of the most well known cars in American television history,” said Jalen. “I am proud to own such an esteemed car, but it means so much more to benefit the lives of Detroit youth with the launch of the Jalen Rose Leadership Academy this coming September. Funding for schools is essential to their overall success, and I saw the auction of the General Lee as a key way to help raise money and awareness for the school.”

The auction will get underway on May 23rd, and the car will be listed with an opening bid of $45,000. You can get more information now by checking out the following link:  http://bit.ly/GeneralLeeAuction4JRLA. This is a no-reserve auction with the proceeds going to the JRLA. So if you want one of the few surviving General Lees and support a great cause, head over to eBay for more information on both the car and Jalen Rose Leadership Academy.

Dodge Avenger Rally Concept

In the wild world of Rally racing, drivers and equipment have to race on courses where the conditions and surfaces range from the packed ice and snow of the Midwest and Northeast to the stifling heat and boulder strewn trails of the southwest. To show our fans that the new 2011 Avenger is tough as rocks, our friends at Mopar along with their new partners, Magneti Marelli have joined forces in creating a Rally concept vehicle that will be a rolling test bed for future parts from both brands.

The project began with a production 2011 Heat that was immediately put on a diet and lost nearly 200 pounds by stripping the interior of sound insulation, back seats, door panels and other creature comforts and non-essential factory equipment. Then the engineers from both Mopar and Magneti Marelli began transforming it into a really cool race- inspired vehicle that could take on challenging rally courses. For safety and structural reinforcement, a full 8-point Mopar roll cage was installed along with a strut tower brace. Special lightweight race seats with 5-point racing harnesses keep the driver and navigator firmly planted. OMP, a leader in racing hardware, supplied the and diamond plate foot well. Mopar and Magneti Marelli installed a purpose-built center stack and console with a compact high-performance 1 GB data logger, integrated GPS and inertial platform with real-time calculation of pitch and roll angles. This way you know where you are headed and what your ‘angle of attack is’.

Under the hood is the new, award winning Pentastar 3.6-liter V-6 engine that in production models produces a best-in-class 283 horsepower while achieving 29 mpg on the highway. The Pentastar V-6 engine in the Avenger Rally concept car has been bumped from 283 to 300 horsepower thanks to a Mopar Performance exhaust system, cold-air intake and some minor calibration tweaks. The six-speed automatic is now controlled by paddle shifters integrated into the steering wheel. To keep the Avenger Rally concept on the course, the high-performance Mopar/Magneti Marelli braking system provides a stable, solid braking performance under all road conditions. This trick braking package features a single-lever, dual-control rear braking system, which allows the driver to actuate both rear brakes in order to initiate the sudden slides and turns required when blasting through the challenging and tough rally courses.

The Avenger Rally concept also had a modified suspension courtesy of Mopar/Magneti Marelli that lowers the ride by 1.5 inches thus improving handling, cornering ability and helping the vehicle blast over the numerous hazards on the course. Tough Pirelli 225/650 R18 competition P-Zero tires and unique Mopar/Magneti Marelli 18-inch alloy racing wheels are on all four corners keep to the power on the ground. The exterior of the Avenger is finished in sinister Brilliant Black and features an “in-your-face” Mopar/Magneti Marelli graphics wrap. Other exterior enhancements include a rear spoiler, hood pins and mud flaps.

Our own gear head Ralph Gilles had an opportunity run the Avenger Rally concept through its paces at our world class proving grounds in Chelsea, Michigan and if the mile wide grin on his face is any indication, this package is a winner!
