The sixth annual LX Spring Festival is rapidly approaching like a 7,000 horsepower HEMI® dragster on a four second pass. This gathering of diehards will take place on Saturday, March 26 in the Orange County Great Park (formerly MCAS El Toro) in Irvine, California. We want to spread the word among the nation and in case you’re new to our community, the LX Spring Festival brings together well over 700 owners and enthusiasts of our late-model Charger/Magnum/Challenger vehicles (our Chrysler 300 cousins are also part of the action). This is the largest gathering of our late-model performance cars and you’ll see everything from wild customs to mild modifications and everything in between. We’ll also have our stunning new 2012 Charger SRT8 and 2011 Green With Envy Challenger SRT8 on display. Our SRT engineers and techies will also be on hand to provide all the juicy details on our new ground pounding 392 HEMI® along with answers to just about any question you throw at them. We’ll also have some cool drifting exhibitions from Samuel “The Crazy Swede” Hubinette along with other fun filled activities.

“Spring Festival 6 will be the largest gathering of passionate LX/LC/LD owners to date, with attendees driving or flying from 27 states, 4 Canadian Providences, Sweden and Germany” said event organizer John Fortuno. “Each year the event grows leaps and bounds due in part to great team effort of the guys and gals from the SoCal LX club. This year we are at a record pace and have already exceeded last year’s totals. Spring Festival is where the owners get a chance to share the rides and meet Chrysler and ’s leadership. To say that you will have nearly 1,000 registered to attend is great, but when you consider the oldest vehicle is 6 1/2 years old is impressive. Spring Festival is not a display of generations of a brand or model, it is Modern Mopar at its best.”

If you plan on attending, make sure to register online now and be prepared to have a great time, meet lots of cool people and burn some rubber!

The End Of The Road…For Now

When Scott and I were asked to develop an enthusiast-based tour featuring the 2011 R/T and SRT8 392, we had no doubt it would be an amazing experience. Piloting two of the last true rear-wheel-drive, V8-powered American muscle cars across 8,000 miles of the good ol’ US of A, taking them to ’s most devout fan-base was sure to be one helluva time. My trusty stead for the trip was the 2011 R/T Max, loaded to the gills with every option. Not a bad way to get around.

I’d seen the new Charger once prior to the Highway Tour at a Brand Immersion Day at Chrysler Headquarters last August. I was absolutely awestruck with the car’s new look. In the months before I had seen the spy shots of the 2011 Charger circulating on the internet. You know, the ones with the cover peeled back and that new nose prominently poking out?

Based on the photo, I was apprehensive about the new design; after all, I loved the current Charger. I fondly remember working at the Chicago Auto Show back in 2005 shortly after we unveiled the 2006 – it was polarizing, to say the least. Ten days of consumer feedback left their mark, and the next five years of consumer feedback at auto shows played out much the same as those 10 days in February of 2005.

There were plenty of folks who absolutely LOVED this new Charger. It was unlike anything else out there. An aggressive-looking rear-wheel-drive, V8-powered performance…sedan.

But, the newest incarnation of the historic Charger nameplate also had its detractors. The classic Mopar guys? They were undoubtedly miffed. “Four doors on a Charger?!?! An automatic tranny?!?! What happened to the 1999 Charger Concept Car?” All valid points. (Although, for the record, the 1999 Concept was a four door, many people didn’t realize that.)

I was a fan of the new Charger, for both the fond memories I had of its launch when I was new to the whole auto show world, and also for what it represented. You mean, I can own a modern -powered piece of American muscle car history, and fit my family in it?!?! I know all the classic Mopar guys out there are trying to keep their blood pressure in check at this moment. I know what they’re thinking, or yelling at their computer screens right now for that matter. “Who is this girl?” “She wouldn’t know a from a hole in the ground — how DARE she!?!?” And I get it; the original was a thing of beauty – legend even – especially the coveted 1968-1970 model years. With their plethora of engine/carb/tranny options, the available 426 powerplant and memorable roles in classic muscle car era films and television shows like The Dukes of Hazzard and Bullitt, the classic Chargers were the stuff muscle car aficionados dream about.

I understand that my age prevents me from ever appreciating the original Charger the way someone who grew up in the muscle car heyday does – the days when you could afford a new Charger while still in your teens if you worked hard enough, when two doors outsold four, when fuel economy and the smog index weren’t even a concern, pesky safety devices like airbags didn’t exist and seatbelts were optional. But, as a girl who grew up and has spent her whole life in the suburbs of Detroit, where you needn’t look farther than down your own street to see examples of some of the finest automobiles the Motor City ever made, a girl who took Auto Lab in high school and a girl who has spent the last seven years representing Chrysler’s products on the auto show/specialty event circuit, I’ve developed a true appreciation for American muscle cars, both new and old. I mean no disrespect to the original Charger by the things I say in regard to the new , I just think it’s okay to like both, even if for different reasons.

On that day in August, Scott and I stepped into Ralph’s Design Dome and got our first glimpse at the 2011 . We were blown away. The spy shots had done this car no justice. In person, it was menacing and elegant at the same time. What, in the most famous spy photo seemed to be an exaggerated “nose-forward” front-end, appeared, without a doubt intimidating, but in the most refined way possible. The new muscled hood with its throwback scallops looked slick and aggressive.

Prior to that day, the front was really all we had seen. There in person, the profile was striking, all sleek lines and the return of that “Coke-bottle” design was a thing to rejoice! Those door scallops, reminiscent of the ’68-’70 Charger looked magnificent! And the rear, those taillights – STUNNING!!! A total of 164 individually illuminated LEDs set the entire rear-end ablaze, and as evidenced later on the Highway Tour, were visible from blocks away. These elements came together so beautifully, giving the 2011 Charger what will prove to be one of the most recognizable designs of the era, both coming and going.

What would the interior look like though? That was a biggie. I’d spent the last six years hearing complaints about the previous Charger interior with its hard “plasticky” dashboard and lack of sophistication. This new interior was so entirely different, it was almost unbelievable. Every panel was sculptured and soft, with the use of aluminum and LED lighting; the look was sporty, but more luxurious that ever before. The new steering wheel and logo looked great! Features like Adaptive Cruise Control, power tilt and telescoping steering never before seen on a were now available. To say I was blown away would be an understatement – knowing that I’d be piloting one across the country in a few months made my first look at the new Charger that much more satisfying.

So, the fateful day when I got my first look at our Highway Charger came on November 7, 2010. I had just returned from SEMA, where the rest of the world got a look at Mopar Underground’s and the public’s anticipation of the production version was nearing fever pitch. I had even met a few enthusiasts there whom we ended up seeing on the actual Highway Tour a few weeks later.

Seeing the new Charger back in August was one thing, cruising down Woodward Avenue in it added an entirely new element to my opinion of the car. Watching people do double-takes and the thumbs up I received from a guy in a Mercedes S550 really proved how striking this car was.

Scott got to drive it for the first time a few days before I did, and he recounted the story of watching two drivers on I-75 jockey to capture photos on their cell phones – more evidence of the car’s magnetism.

I really love the new Uconnect® Touch system, and I found that getting acquainted with it was a breeze. Although I am not technologically stunted, I am far from what anyone would call a “techie” and I breezed right through the functions and features, feeling comfortable with the system within the first hour and proficient within the first day. I love the fact that every one of the vehicle’s functions are controllable through the Uconnect® Touch unit.

Shortly after hitting the Highway, I realized that there were several other convenience features that I was exceptionally fond of. In an effort to avoid sounding like a paid endorsement, I’ll narrow down the top two.

The passive entry system proved to be unbelievably convenient. I loved being able to walk up to the Charger, key in my pocket, backpack or clipped to my belt, and simply place my hand on the trunk or door release for instant access. The passive entry system, combined with the push-button start feature, meant that as long as I had the key on me, I had full operational control. Never did I have to dig at the bottom of my purse or search my backpack for the key.

I never want to live without Adaptive Cruise Control. This was immensely convenient when traveling long distances like we did on the Highway Tour. I could set the cruise control speed and distance I wished to maintain from the vehicle in front of me and the car was able to adjust its speed accordingly when I approached a slower vehicle. Once I passed, the Charger smoothly returned to my intended speed. It was fantastic!

I love the idea of the new lifestyle packages. Several people we met on the road appreciated the fact that Charger buyers are finally able to get options in the SE V6 models formerly reserved for the R/T V8 models or never before offered.

Speaking of that 5.7L V8, where else do you find that these days? This is what I really love about the – it’s in a class by itself. Sure, it has some major competitors, but they don’t offer V8 power paired with rear-wheel-drive and performance-tuned suspension and steering for around $30K? If they do, they’re missing two doors and a generous backseat, which makes them a different class of vehicle all together. And let’s get something straight, a twin turbo V6 doesn’t sound or feel like a 370 horsepower V8, folks.

When you think performance and the thrill of driving, a front-wheel-drive biased platform isn’t what comes to mind. If a V6 is what you’re looking for, we’ve got a sweet 292 horsepower DOHC Pentastar V6 in our Charger SE. Fancy all-wheel-drive? We’ve got that too, complete with an active transfer case, front-axle disconnect and paired with a naturally aspirated , thank you very much.

As far as the use of Continuously Variable Transaxles/Transmissions is concerned, we know there’s a place for them, and it isn’t in performance cars. Shift shock? Give me a break. Because I really hate feeling my tranny shift gears, but could you give me paddle shifters with my CVT that allow me to simulate the feeling of shifting gears, because I miss it sometimes. I mean really? I’ll take some more vanilla ice-cream with my vanilla ice-cream, thanks.

But, I digress. Day by day I fell more and more in love with the new Charger. Its combination of styling, performance, comfort and convenience stole my heart. I loved showing and telling people all of Charger’s new features and watching current owners be blown away by this newest incarnation while people new to the brand had their misconceptions washed away.

The Highway Tour proved to be a smashing success. Scott and I loved taking these cars on the road to ’s most devout enthusiasts before they ever hit showrooms. We also made sure to leave a little something to remember us by whenever possible.

Prior to Highway, I represented Chrysler Group exclusively for seven years on the auto show and specialty event circuit. I knew this tour would be unlike anything I had done before, because we would be taking ’s two most historic nameplates out to ’s biggest fans. As different as I thought this tour would be, I couldn’t have predicted the outpouring of support we received at each and every one of our stops on the Highway Tour. What I knew would be an awesome experience, proved to be the best 40 days of my life. Even taking into consideration the long hours detailing the Charger, longer drives on little sleep and six weeks of “road food,” we met some of the best people in the world. We had a blast getting to know these wonderful fans, seeing their passion for Chrysler Group products and learning their stories. The people we visited are enthusiasts, yes, but now, we’re happy to be able to call them friends!

The amount of love, commitment and appreciation demonstrated by fans nationwide left me feeling warm and fuzzy inside. There is no more satisfying job than one you’re passionate about and that allows you to share your passion with like-minded people. I feel so lucky to have had the good fortune to share my passion and pride for products with all of the wonderful enthusiasts out there.

People often tell us that we have the best job in the world…and they’re right!

2012 Charger SRT8 – Stronger, Faster, Smarter

Posted on: February 9, 2011 – 10:20 am by RLD

Today at the Chicago Auto Show, Dodge will reveal the new 2012 Charger SRT8 to a crowd of automotive journalists from around the globe.

Hot on heels of the 2011 Challenger SRT8 392, the rubber on the pavement has hardly had a chance to cool with today’s announcement of the 2012 Charger SRT8. This further reinforces the Dodge name as a performance brand.

So with that being said, let’s get into the juicy details of the 2012 Dodge Charger SRT8. Under the hood is the new 6.4-liter HEMI® V-8 with an estimated 465 horsepower and 465 lb.-ft. of torque (the SRT gear heads aren’t quite done tweaking). What makes this even better is the standard Fuel Saver Technology (four-cylinder mode) on the 6.4-liter HEMI that will improve fuel efficiency over the previous model. Other internal goodies include a high-lift camshaft and active intake manifold that will provide increased low-end torque along with more top-end power. Our SRT engineers are able to achieve this by altering the runner length inside the manifold based on engine speed.

For the first time in any Chrysler Group LLC SRT product, standard paddle shift technology joins the standard AutoStick on the floor shifter on the 2012 Charger SRT8. Both will be mated to the proven W5A580 five-speed automatic transmission and both shifting techniques will allow the driver to have some fun going through the gearbox but the performance calibrated transmission controller will help keep you out of the red line.

The new Charger SRT8 also received a makeover in the ride and handling department. An adaptive damping suspension takes driver inputs and will automatically tune the suspension for specific conditions. For those of you looking to shrink time and distance, a “Sport” setting is available while the “Auto” setting may be appropriate for those morning commutes.

From a styling standpoint, the Charger SRT8 will stand out among its cousins. With its aggressive front and rear fascias, a new rear spoiler and a sculptured hood complete with 6.4L HEMI badges, the folks in the lane next to you will quickly know what you’re all about.

The interior also gets massaged as a new leather-wrapped SRT exclusive steering wheel and carbon-weave, fiber aluminum trim pieces. The front seats will have an aggressive bolstering to help keep you in place when you take your ride to an SRT Track Experience. Speaking of performance driving, the new instrument panel display can be customized to include instant driver feedback such as 0-60 mph and quarter-mile times along with g-forces and much more with the exclusive performance section.

Look for the 2012 Dodge Charger SRT8 to arrive in your dealer showrooms later this year.

And Then There Were Three

Posted on: February 7, 2011 – 8:55 am by Scott Vandekerckhove

As stated previously, SMS Supercars was the last stop on the Highway Tour. And even though torrential rain had dashed much of our hopes for a huge finish in SoCal, we were astounded by the undying support of those who still showed up in defiance of Mother Nature. These Folk are absolute die hards, to say the very least.

Let me introduce you to three diehards from the newly formed West Coast Challenger crew: Greg Miller, Larry Corbett, and Terrence Wenner (pictured below left to right).

Not only did they brave the rain at all four of our SoCal stops, but they selflessly exposed their Challengers to the elements just to be with us. The weather was just miserable. Greg said, “Because of this Highway Tour, I brought the car out in the rain for the very first time. The wipers had never even been used prior to this day.” How’s that for sacrifice?

Tucked inside the garage at SMS, I asked the three Challenger owners their thoughts on both their cars and the new ones we had brought. Greg started the conversation.

“Back when the original Challenger was around between ’70 and ’74, I always loved them, but I was too young to own one. Then, fast forward to the concept car that came out in 2006, and I said to myself, ‘ has given me a second chance!’”

Greg (pictured above with his Bright Silver 2009 ) bought his Challenger from none other than, Bob Frederick. “The best part about the car is the exterior design,” Greg said. “I’ve added a Predator Tune, Zoomers Exhaust, an AFE Intake, and an oil catch can. But, truth be told, I do not race my car ever. I preserve it.”

Even though Greg chooses not to race his own car doesn’t mean he did not beat the snot out of Chrysler’s cars at the Track Experience. Much like others who describe their time out on the track, Greg went on and on about how awesome it is. “It is the single most fun I’ve ever had on one day in my entire life. It is an experience that I will never forget for as long as I live.”

Terrence (pictured below with his 2010 R/T) is 46 years old and still proudly serves in the U.S. Navy. Probably a good thing he has Naval experience because it was more like swimming than driving in SoCal that day. “I took the day off to come be here with . Wouldn’t have missed it for anything,” he said.

Larry (pictured below with his 2009 R/T), much like Greg, was originally sucked in by the concept car and had a historical fascination with the Challenger. “The fastest cars at my high school were a Valiant and Cuda, but they got no respect. Nowadays, gets the respect with the most current Challenger.”

So far, Larry has not experienced a single problem with his R/T, simply saying, “I’d do it all over again.” He continued, “This new car looks better than the original if you ask for my opinion. No one has done a retro car justice like has done the Challenger.”

With his eyes gazing over the new 392, Larry was very impressed by the changes made by listening to its customers. “The new trunk release, seat adjustments, interior lights, and relocation of the cruise control buttons are all awesome.” Going even further, Larry blurted out, “There will be a 392 in the West Coast Challenger fleet very soon.”

Stationed on the second floor at his place of work, Larry even admits to sneaking over to the window to snap pictures of his Challenger in the parking lot. “I love to look down and see my baby sittin’ there! I’m still blown away by the reaction I get from this car.”

As the last tour stop came to a close, we shook hands with the triumvirate of Challenger owners just before their departure. Greg, the Club’s President, raised his hands and said, “We didn’t buy these cars to become rock stars. It just comes that way.”

Indeed it does, Greg. Indeed it does.

The North Georgia Mopar Club – Making a hobby out of giving back

Posted on: November 29, 2010 – 9:15 am by Heather Heughens

HEMI Highway Tour Stop #7

Sunday, November 21, Morrow, Georgia – Rick Ellis, President of the North Georgia Mopar Club, wants you to know that loving Chrysler products is more than just a hobby, it’s a reason for folks with a common interest to come together and do some good.

Founded in 1990 by four guys who shared a love for all things Mopar, particularly the A-Body vehicles (Plymouth Duster, Dodge Dart, Plymouth Barracuda, etc.) of the 1960s, the North Georgia Mopar Club’s goal was to give Mopar vehicles stronger representation at local automotive events. Twenty years later the club has grown to more than 350 members from all over Georgia and the southeastern United States.

Rick, who has always been a “Mopar guy” offered this explanation for his involvement with the Mopar enthusiast community: “My wife is to blame for this! In 2000, she got one of the first Chrysler PT Cruisers and joined a PT Cruiser club.” Rick’s wife joined the club before she even had possession of her PT. The overwhelmingly popular Cruiser was delivered on a Thursday and by that Saturday she was on her first cruise.

“My wife was having too much fun, so I had to go out and get a Chrysler Prowler,” Rick continued. “It’s one of the last Prowlers ever made and I love it!”

After many years as a club member and then vice president, Rick was given the opportunity to succeed president Chris Street when Chris stepped down. Rick had just retired from law enforcement and had the time to get more involved with the club.

“Chris started a lot of momentum with the club’s involvement with charities, and I wanted to maintain that momentum into my presidency,” Rick said.

Chris echoed Rick’s statements. “I can’t say enough about this club,” he said. “We’re more than just a group of gearheads – we’re a group of caring, giving people.”

The North Georgia Mopar Club gave more than $13,000 to charities in 2009, and they’re hoping to top that by the end of this year. Charities gifted include the N.G.M.C. Hero Fund (
www.northgeorgiamoparclub.com), Victory Junction Gang (www.victoryjunction.org), Rainbow Village, Inc. (rainbowvillage.org), Angel Flight (angelflight.org), Toys for Tots (www.toysfortots.org), Susan G. Komen for the Cure (www.komen.org) and Hot Rodders Children’s Charity (hotrodderschildrenscharity.org).

And here you thought the most charitable thing Dodge owners ever do is allow you to pass them on the highway every once in a while!

An Empire Built on a Foundation of “Brick & Mopar”

Posted on: November 22, 2010 – 4:20 pm by Heather Heughens

Nov.17 Empire Mopars, New Windsor, N.Y. – Stop #4

New Windsor, New York – Pat and John Macioces’ love of all things Mopar began as stories like these often do – with their father. Ever since their dad told the boys that Chrysler made the best cars because, “They take technology everyone has and they make it better,” they’ve been taking classic Mopar vehicles and making them cleaner, leaner, faster and meaner… in some cases, over 1,000 horsepower meaner.

What began as a hobby in the early 1980s turned into a full-blown business venture for Pat and John once it became evident that expertise such as theirs was in high demand.

During a HEMI Highway Tour stop at Empire Auto Body, filled with Mopar bodies waiting to be returned to their former glory, we got a better idea as to just how much work goes into making that happen. The shop, just 10 miles away from the United States Military Academy at West Point and 65 miles north of New York City, is filled with Dodge, Chrysler and Plymouth vehicles in various stages of development, and John filled us in on the back story of each, and plans for completion.

During our visit, enthusiasts from all over the tri-state area brought their vintage beauties out for a day of show-and-tell. Standing next to their most prized possessions, each was beaming and eager to share the history of their vehicle and how it came to be the picture of muscle car perfection we saw before us.

And lucky for us, burn-outs were on the agenda for the day’s activities.

Pat offered some insight as to what made classic Mopar vehicles cooler than their competition at the time: “What I love about classic Mopar vehicles is the fact that Chrysler offered a performance version of nearly every one,” he said. “Even the so-called ‘economy’ vehicles of the era offered a souped-up sports package. Plus, no manufacturers had the high impact colors or unique stripe combination offered by Chrysler.”

Nowadays, Empire Mopars is responsible for some of the coolest true vehicle restorations, and some even cooler “resto-mods” – vehicles that appear stock, but pack some modern technologies both inside and out, and a few additional ponies. Then there’s the wild muscle machines that look intimidatingly fast even at a dead standstill – Empire Mopars makes those too!

As a matter of fact, nine out of ten of the vehicles they work on are classified as resto-mod, including Mopar Action Magazine’s Tech Editor Richard Ehrenberg’s 1969 Plymouth Valiant, a.k.a., “The Green Brick.”

Pat and Richard met shortly after the Brick got into a bit of a fender bender. Empire Mopars got the Brick back to good as new and the friendship between Richard Ehrenberg and the Macioce brothers was born.

A Mopar fanatic himself, Richard Ehrehberg has extremely high standards when it comes to where he takes his beloved vintage Mopars when they need a little TLC. For Richard, it’s Empire Auto Body. Perhaps it’s because, as Pat himself says, “We don’t do anything less than 100%. If our name is going to be on it, it has to be perfect.”

Perfection comes at a cost, but when you see the meticulous craftsmanship exhibited in Empire Auto Body’s work, you’ll agree – it’s worth every penny.

The Challenger R/T Classic Package is back for 2011. Dressed in Brilliant Black Crystal Pearl with retro R/T stripes inspired from the 1971 model, this one bad looking hombre!

With a 370 horsepower 5.7L HEMI under the hood, available six-speed manual transmission and 3.92 rear axle ratio, Challenger R/T has the muscle to back up its great looks.

Designed For Enthusiasts and Back With a Vengeance: New 2011 Dodge Challenger Delivers Upgraded Performance, Handling, Style and Value

The new 2011 Dodge Challenger delivers more of what muscle-car enthusiasts want — a more powerful and efficient engine lineup, maximum grip with an all-new performance suspension design and even more athletic styling — all executed with quality and precision.

“To deliver the most thrilling to drive Challenger lineup ever, Dodge upgraded the iconic coupe’s performance hardware for maximum precision and grip,” said Ralph Gilles, President and CEO — Dodge Brand, Chrysler Group LLC. “From its lighter aluminum Pentastar V-6 engine with 305 standard horsepower, redesigned aluminum suspension geometry with aggressive negative camber for better cornering grip, improved feel and fade-resistant braking, to a near-balanced 50/50 weight distribution, the new 2011 Dodge Challenger has the hardware to compete.”

Improved Agility, High-speed Stability and Braking Performance

The new 2011 Dodge Challenger combines world-class ride, refinement and braking performance with more power and new track-tuned suspensions to deliver a thrilling driving experience.

Redesigned to handle the all-new 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine’s 305 horsepower (227 kW) — 55 more horsepower than the previous V-6 engine — the new 2011 Dodge Challenger SE features a new road-gripping touring-tuned suspension with wider 18-inch wheels and tires for added control. In addition, a revised brake-pedal ratio and refined brake booster improve braking response and feel.

Upping the ante for 2011, the new Challenger Rallye with the Super Sport Group features an all-new performance-tuned suspension with larger performance-disc brakes, performance steering, larger and wider 20 x 8.0-inch aluminum chrome-clad wheels with new P245/45R20 Firestone Firehawk all-season performance tires for improved grip and a 3.06 rear-axle ratio for improved all around acceleration.

Challenger’s new second-generation rear-wheel-drive architecture delivers world-class ride and handling with any of its three available suspension tunings and high-performing wheel and tire combinations (in order of increased handling and braking performance):

Touring-tuned:

  • Standard on Dodge Challenger SE
    • 18 x 7.5-inch aluminum wheels with P235/55R18 Michelin MXM4 all-season touring tires
    • Touring brake package

Performance-tuned:

  • Standard on Dodge Challenger R/T, available on Challenger Rallye
    • 18 x 7.5-inch aluminum wheels with P235/55R18 Michelin MXM4 all-season touring tires (R/T)
    • 20 x 8-inch aluminum wheels with P245/45R20 Firestone Firehawk all-season performance tires (available on R/T and Rallye with Super Sport Group)
    • Performance brake package

Super Track Pak:

  • Available on the Dodge Challenger R/T
    • 20 x 8-inch aluminum wheels with P245/45R20 Goodyear Eagle F1 three-season performance tires
    • High-performance monotube shock absorbers and springs
    • Performance brake package with high-performance brake linings
    • Three-mode electronic stability control (ESC) with “ESC-off” mode

New Second Generation E-segment Architecture Delivers Maximum Grip With World-class Ride and Handling

Performance handling requires maximum grip, and the new 2011 Dodge Challenger SE and R/T models feature redesigned front- and rear-suspension geometries with premium suspension hardware for world-class ride and handling.

At the heart of Dodge Challenger’s new suspension design are isolated, lightweight front- and rear-suspension cradles that create a rigid assembly needed for precise performance.

At the front cradle, new monotube front-shock absorbers, springs and a repositioned lower-front shock-to-suspension-link bushing deliver improved control, ride and comfort. Combined, these suspension components provide improved handling and durability, while reducing the harshness from road bumps compared with the previous Dodge Challenger. In addition, all-new front-suspension hydrobushings — a premium suspension component — reduce ride harshness and prolong smooth braking characteristics.

At the rear, the new 2011 Dodge Challenger’s five-link rear-suspension design features new roll-steer geometry, allowing independent control of camber and toe suspension movement for world-class handling. All-new monotube shock-absorbers and springs make the ride more refined, while improving handling and dynamics. Premium urethane jounce bumpers and suspension links with rubber shock absorber bushings help the Challenger’s rear suspension contribute to a quieter interior cabin. In addition, new upper and lower spring-seat isolators provide additional dampening to Challenger’s rear suspension to deliver smooth engagement over bumps.

A more aggressive front- and rear-camber geometry improve, the all-new Dodge Challenger’s road-holding capabilities. Set at -1.0 degrees in the front and -1.75 degrees in the rear, Dodge Challenger is set up for high-speed cornering with its tires leaning inboard at the top relative to the body. New larger diameter front- and rear-stabilizer bars keep the chassis nimble during cornering and make body lean a thing of the past.

Improved Performance Steering Feel With Energy Saving Electro-hydraulic Power Steering (EHPS)

An all-new electro-hydraulic power steering (EHPS) system transmits precise road feel to the driver and improves on-center tracking and fuel economy.

Depending on the “control mode” within the EHPS system, the system applies variable steering effort to different driving conditions. EHPS analyzes steering angle, vehicle speed, engine rpm and chassis control systems 13 times per second for precise performance-handling feel. When the Dodge Challenger is stationary or moving at low speeds, the hydraulic pump increases power assistance for a lighter steering-wheel effort. The pump reduces steering assistance at highway speeds to give the performance coupe a firmer feel, and as a consequence, the system delivers a fuel savings of up to 1.5 percent by consuming less energy than a belt-driven pump.

All-new Pentastar V-6 Engine Delivers Added Efficiency and an Impressive 305 Horsepower

With its all-new 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine producing 305 horsepower — 55 more horsepower than the engine it replaces — the new 2011 Dodge Challenger SE is the most powerful, refined and technologically advanced entry-level Challenger ever.

The 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine is an all-new design, featuring double-overhead camshafts (DOHC) with dual-independent cam phasers (DICP), integrated exhaust manifolds, polymer-coated piston skirts, forged connecting rods and a high-pressure die-cast aluminum cylinder block in a 60-degree configuration. In addition, Dodge Challenger engineers added an all-new cold-air induction system and dual exhausts from the headers back to the exhaust tips for maximum output. The result is 305 track-ready horsepower (227 kW) at 6,350 rpm and a responsive 268 lb.-ft. (363 N•m) of torque at 4,800 rpm. The engine’s torque exceeds 90 percent of its peak value from 1,800 to 6,400 rpm, which provides customers outstanding drivability and responsiveness.

Thanks to its all-aluminum design, the all-new 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine is 45 lbs. (20 kg) lighter than the previous V-6 engine and provides the new 2011 Dodge Challenger V-6 with a 52.4 / 47.6 front-to-rear weight distribution (compared with 53.5/46.5 previously) for improved balance and handling.

Refinement was a key objective for every component during the design phase of the engine and was achieved by using advanced computer-aided engineering techniques. Structural, intake and exhaust areas of the engine were designed to deliver low levels of overall sound and achieve specific audible quality goals that meet discerning customer requirements. Combined with the use of all-new premium hydraulic powertrain mounts, the all-new 2011 Dodge Challenger delivers refinement in all powertrain applications and RPMs.

Designed to be environmentally responsible, the 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine features lead-free engine construction and an environmentally-friendly oil filter system. The integrated oil cooler/filter system uses a filter element which can be incinerated, avoiding the land-fill burden of traditional filter systems. The use of long-life spark plugs and a high-energy coil-on-plug ignition system maximizes component life and helps reduce cost of ownership.

The all-new 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine is manufactured at Chrysler Group LLC’s Trenton South Engine Plant in Trenton, Mich.

New Challenger R/T Features up to 376 Horsepower With Four-cylinder Mode Efficiency

For the performance enthusiast, the new 2011 Dodge Challenger R/T with its the legendary 5.7-liter HEMI® V-8 engine delivers up to 376 horsepower (280 kW) and 410 lb.-ft. of torque (556 N•m).

When paired with the newly refined Tremec TR6060 six-speed manual transmission’s Track Pak the 2011 Dodge Challenger R/T delivers smoother shifts, while delivering even more power through unique performance-tuned dual exhaust and under-floor mufflers with low-restriction bottle resonators. The result is 376 track-tearing horsepower that can accelerate the performance coupe from 0-60 mph in less than 6 seconds and a sinister exhaust growl for the cars left in its rear-view mirror.

The all-new 2011 Dodge Challenger R/T’s 5.7-liter HEMI engine with five-speed automatic transmission produces 372 horsepower (277 kW) and 400 lb.-ft. of torque (542 N•m), plus its FuelSaver technology seamlessly transitions to high-fuel-economy four-cylinder mode when less power is needed and V-8 mode when more power is in demand. This optimizes fuel economy when full V-8 power is not required, without sacrificing vehicle performance or capability.

The 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 engine also features variable-valve timing (VVT) to improve fuel economy in two ways. First, it reduces the engine’s pumping work by closing the intake valve later. Second, it increases the expansion process of the combustion event. This allows more work to be transferred to the wheels instead of being lost out of the exhaust port as heat. VVT improves engine breathing, which improves engine efficiency and power.

Updated Exterior Enhancements Improve Form and Function

To match its unmistakable muscle-car styling, upgraded powertrain and improved handling capabilities, the new 2011 Dodge Challenger features performance-driven exterior enhancements.

At the front of the new Dodge Challenger’s wide stance is a restyled trapezoidal front air dam with a larger opening to cool the legendary HEMI V-8 or potent Pentastar V-6 engine. Providing additional downforce is a larger “duck bill” front spoiler in black to match the coupe’s lower sill.

Larger 18-inch aluminum wheels are now standard equipment on the Dodge Challenger and provide a more athletic stance with wider tires. For added style and performance handling, the Dodge Challenger SE with the new Rallye package now offers the all-new Super Sport Group, providing new five-spoke 20 x 8-inch chrome-clad aluminum wheels and even wider low-profile tires. For a touch of nostalgia, Challenger’s iconic bright racing-style fuel-filler door is now standard on all models.

Topping off the new Dodge Challenger SE and the new Challenger Rallye’s good looks are dual-chromed exhaust tips integrated into the lower rear fascia.

Upgraded Race-inspired Interior With More Standard Equipment

The interior equipment in the new 2011 Dodge Challenger is significantly upgraded to give customers added style, convenience, value and best-in-class accommodations.

Transmitting Challenger’s new precision steering and feel of the road is an all-new thick-rimmed three-spoke Dodge steering wheel for better performance feel and grip. The right-sized hand-stitched, leather-wrapped steering wheel features silver metallic painted spokes located at the 3-, 6- and 9 o’clock positions. The new sport steering wheel features back-lit cruise, Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC) and available Uconnect® Voice Command controls mounted on the front face, which makes it easier to see at night.

Dodge Challenger’s trapezoidal race-inspired instrument panel now features a new four-bomb gauge cluster with chromed accent rings and new sport-themed graphics. Inside the cluster, a new four-line display EVIC is now standard equipment and shows the driver trip and multimedia information from the Media Center radio.

To make long cruises more comfortable, the new 2011 Dodge Challenger features redesigned seat structures with improved cushioning and more comfortable contours. Challenger’s standard power driver’s seat now features power lumbar for improved back support. To make it easier to get in and out of the backseat, the driver’s seat now features seatback tilt- with memory and an easy-to-reach release handle, while the front-passenger seat adds tilt-and-slide with memory, which makes it even easier to use. When equipped with leather, Dodge Challenger’s new Nappa leather seating surfaces provide a premium look and feel.

Dodge Challenger offers exceptional rear seating for a two-door coupe, achieving best-in-class rear head room (37.4 inches) and legroom (32.6 inches) room compared with its competition. With class-exclusive seating for five, coupled with best-in-class cargo space (16.2 cu. ft.), the new 2011 Dodge Challenger is the segments best day-to-day pony-car choice, offering maximum comfort and functionality.

Next to Dodge Challenger’s LED-illuminated cupholders, a new hand-stitched leather-wrapped shift knob is now standard and provides improved feel while toggling between the coupe’s standard Auto Stick transmission gears.

Finishing the Dodge Challenger’s interior upgrade is the addition of standard automatic climate control for added convenience and improved comfort.

  11. Brake/Park interlock: Prevents a Dodge Challenger with an automatic transmission from being shifted out of “Park” unless the brake pedal is applied (standard)
  12. Brake-traction control system (BTCS): Helps to keep driving wheels from spinning during acceleration from a stop or during slow speeds by applying individual brakes to the slipping wheel(s) (standard)
  13. Child Seat Anchor System: LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren) is designed to ease installation of compatible aftermarket child seats (standard)
  14. Constant-force retractors (CFR): Regulates the force exerted on the occupant by the seat belt and then gradually releases seat-belt webbing in a controlled manner (standard)
  15. Crumple zones: Designed to compress during an accident in order to absorb energy from an impact, which decreases transfer of that energy to occupants (standard)
  16. Electronic stability control (ESC): Enhances driver control and helps maintain directional stability under all conditions. Provides the benefit in critical driving situations, such as turns, and is valuable when driving on mixed-surface conditions, including snow, ice or gravel. If there is a discernible difference between driver input through the steering wheel and the Dodge Challenger’s path, ESC applies selective braking and throttle input to guide the vehicle back on to the driver’s intended path
  17. Energy-absorbing steering column: The manual-adjust steering column utilizes two hydroformed coaxial tubes that can move relative to each other to allow the column to move forward for enhanced energy absorption during a crash. The power-adjust steering column employs a calibrated bending element that deforms during column stroke for optimal energy management (standard)
  18. Enhanced Accident Response System (EARS): Makes it easier for emergency personnel to see and reach occupants in the event of an accident by turning on the interior lighting and unlocking the Dodge Challenger’s doors after air bag deployment. Also shuts off flow of fuel to the engine (standard)
  19. Express up/down windows: One-touch powered express up/down window button located on the front driver and passenger-side door (standard)
  20. Full-length side-curtain air bags: Extend protection to all outboard front- and rear-seat passengers. Each side air bag has its own impact sensor that autonomously triggers the air bag on the side where an impact occurs. This type of air bag is housed in the headliner just above side windows (standard)
  21. Garmin® navigation: Easy-to-use maps with audible turn-by-turn directions, more than 6 million points of interest and lane guidance
  22. High-intensity discharge (HID) headlamps: Provide approximately three times the light output of conventional reflector lamps for improved nighttime illumination
  23. Hill-start Assist (HSA): Assists drivers when starting the Challenger from a stop on a hill by maintaining the level of brake pressure applied for a short period of time after a driver’s foot is removed from the brake pedal. If throttle is not applied within a short period of time after the driver’s foot is removed from the brake pedal, brake pressure will be released (standard)
  24. HomeLink universal transceiver: Stores three separate transmitter radio-frequency codes to operate garage-door openers, security gates, security lighting or other radio-controlled devices (standard)
  25. Inside emergency trunk release: A glow-in-the-dark release handle that may be activated in the event of an adult or child is inadvertently trapped inside the trunk (standard)
  26. Intelligent battery sensor (IBS): Continually measures the flow of current into and out of the battery. If the battery is running low, the system intelligently shuts off less critical electrical systems to help prevent an owner being stranded due to a low or depleted battery. When IBS conducts load shedding, an icon appears in the cluster display (standard)
  27. Interior head-impact protection: Interior pillars above the belt line and instrument panel, including areas around windshield and rear window headers, roof and side-rail structures are specifically designed to limit head-impact force (standard)
  28. Keyless Enter-N-Go: When an individual enters the Dodge Challenger, electronic sensors detect if the vehicle key fob is present. The performance coupe will then allow the individual to push a button to start the vehicle without having to insert the key into the ignition. The sensors also allow the deck lid to open without use of pressing the key fob (standard)
  29. Knee bolsters: The lower instrument panel and the glove-box door are designed to properly position the occupant during impact, enabling air bags to work effectively (standard)
  30. Mopar® Electronic Vehicle Tracking System (EVTS): Available in three packages: Base, Silver and Gold. Mopar’s new tracking system provides vehicle owners the peace of mind that comes with always knowing where their vehicle is located. The system has the ability to alert owners if someone else is driving their vehicle too fast or too far, by sending a text. Mopar’s system is powered by Guidepoint Systems, the leader in GPS-enabled stolen vehicle recovery systems. Unlike other vehicle tracking systems, the Mopar EVTS offers nationwide tracking without a subscription.
  31. Occupant restraint controller (ORC): Detects an impact and determines whether a crash is severe enough to trigger air bag deployment and whether the primary or secondary stage inflation is sufficient. In addition the controller detects side impacts and determines whether the rail-curtain and side seat-mounted (thorax protection) air bags should deploy. Engagement of front seat belt pretensioners are also managed through the controller (standard)
  32. Rain Brake Support: New for 2011, the system uses the ESC pump to occasionally push brake pads lightly against brake rotors in rainy conditions in order to keep rotors dry (standard)
  33. Reactive head restraints: Deploy in the event of a rear collision. Restraints are designed to reduce injuries by minimizing the gap between the head restraint and the passenger’s head (standard)
  34. Ready Alert Braking: New for 2011, the system anticipates situations when the driver may initiate an emergency brake stop and uses the ESC pump to set brake pads against rotors in order to decrease the time required for full brake application
  35. Remote (fob) operated windows (front windows – down only): Enable an individual to cool down the Dodge Challenger by opening front windows remotely (standard)
  36. Remote Keyless Entry: Locks and unlocks doors and turns on interior lamps. If the vehicle is equipped with a security alarm, the remote also arms and disarms that system
