Dodge Gets Its Street On With New Everything

Karl Greenberg, Nov 15, 2010 02:31 PM
Dodge ChallengerUntil fairly recently, Chrysler LLC’s Dodge division had been supported almost entirely by the Ram pickup truck. In spite of vehicles like Caliber — intended to move the brand into crossovers — the brand has been hampered by high gasoline prices and a lack of brand identity. When Fiat moved Ram out of the Dodge garage, the brand was forced to find its soul. It did not help that as those gas prices went through the $4 roof, the Durango — once one of the top-selling truck-based SUVs — had no place to go but down, and that the car lineup was — to be kind — uninspired.

One could argue that the brand began trying to exhume its car credibility in late 2007 when, under then-owner N.Y.-based private equity firm Cerberus, Dodge started taking orders for the third-generation Challenger — a nameplate that had not seen daylight since the Mitsubishi-built, econo-boxy, second-generation vehicle was euthanized in 1983. The third-gen Challenger represents an effort by Dodge to get back to “Dodgeness” by offering up a modern take on the classic car.

But the new Challenger, which will now include a version with the famous Hemi engine, is a low-volume muscle car, a halo for the brand. Trouble is, halo vehicles are only halos if other cars in the lineup have the chutzpah to wear them. Ralph Gilles, appointed head of all things Dodge last year when Fiat bought the Chrysler group, promises that such is the case. He says the entire lineup — including the Town and Country minivan — is about to get the kind of street cred that Challenger epitomizes.

Gilles, one of those rare marketing executives who started out as a vehicle designer, was behind the Chrysler 300, introduced when Daimler controlled the company. He became Dodge CEO when Fiat grabbed the Chrysler LLC grille last year. Gilles says, in so many words, that now that Ram has been spun off as its own truck brand, the goal is to make Dodge represent for the street what Jeep represents for the trail.

To achieve that the brand is prepping six new or redesigned cars and a lineup of “lifestyle packages” as well as new ads, events and sponsorships and direct-marketing efforts aimed at Dodge fans — all to imbue all of the Dodge vehicles with a performance-driving feel and image.

“We’ve spent the last year redefining and building the Dodge brand,” said Gilles, whom the company calls “president and CEO” of the Dodge brand. “Now we’re going to show customers what the future of Dodge will look like.”

The lineup includes a new Durango that has three rows of seats, a new version of the Charger, Avenger and Challenger, and new versions of the Journey crossover and Grand Caravan minivan, which Dodge says gets the “driving dynamics of a performance sedan and a little bit of attitude” with new suspension and a V6 motor.

The division is also renewing its relationship with Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series, NASCAR Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series, and Viper Cup racing series, where Dodge will have ride and drive events featuring the halo vehicles: Charger, Challengers and limited-edition factory-modified products wearing the SRT badge.

Gilles said that Dodge is also expanding its lineup of Dodge-licensed merchandise, a venture that has been handled for years by Los Angeles-based BrandSense.

“When I got this job, I went to our Web site to find some Dodge gear, but what I found didn’t really speak to where the brand is going,” he said. “So our merchandising manager and our design staff took a stab and really came up with an overall theme that both speaks to the Dodge brand and is something we’d be proud to wear, and it’s really taking off.”

The brand is also using social media to try to bring in prospects who are probably not shopping Dodge, namely 20- and 30-something consumers. Gilles said the company started going social this year and launched a new enthusiast Web site, RedLetterDodge.com.

“It was like watching the floodgates open. In just a few months, we surpassed more than 120,000 friends on our Dodge Facebook site alone. We see a huge opportunity to continue the conversation we’re having with our fans.”

A Dodge Challenger Love Story – Yesterday & Today

Posted on: November 10, 2010 – 12:00 am by RLD

Here is a great story from a Dodge Challenger fan telling his story on how his love for the Challenger has continued from yesterday to today.

If you would like to get your story on RedLetterDodge, please tell us about it!

I have always been a “car guy” – even when I was a kid. – I had my Dad take me to local car shows – and to car dealers when the new models came out in the Fall each year. When I was in high school I saw the movie “Vanishing Point” . When I saw how that 1970 Challenger R/T performed, I knew that was the car I wanted. I saved money from summer jobs and by the end of my freshman year in college I had enough for a down payment on a 1973 Challenger. I could only afford a base model with a 318 – but it was mine! I remember I really liked the toggle switches Dodge used for the headlamps. If you look at the picture closely, you can see where the dealer had installed what they called “ Opera Windows” in the blind spot on each side of the car. I have nothing but great memories of that car – lots of college road trips and beach trips – it was always fun to drive.
For more of the story and to see the photo gallery, click

I’m sorry to say I traded it after six years, but the beach trips and hot North Carolina sun had taken it’s toll on the green vinyl seats and the dash. Dodge stopped production of the Challenger in 1974 – so I have purchased several sports cars since then (Cougar XR7 – 300ZX –Porsche 924 -BMW 328) When my kids came along, I even did the mini-van thing.

When I read where Dodge announced they were resurrecting the Challenger – based on the 1970 model – I had to have one. My local dealer (Crown Dodge in Greensboro) was really helpful – they found the exact car I wanted (it was in Georgia) at the price I wanted to pay. The 2010 R/T is nothing but fun to drive. Most of all, I like the handling and power this car has. Everywhere I go, it turns heads. There is just nothing like a Dodge Challenger. I look forward driving in to work everyday. When you are listening to ZZ -Top and the growl of that 5.7 Liter Hemi – you can’t help but have a great day! Like I said, I‘m a “car guy” & it’s a Dodge Challenger’s life for me!

Mopar Reveals Hot SEMA Show Cars

by Gordon McDonald on October 25, 2010

The SEMA Show in Las Vegas is the aftermarket industry’s time to shine, so both Dodge and Mopar are bringing their best game to Nevada. Topping the list of introductions is the just-announced Dodge Challenger SRT8 392, which delivers 470 horsepower and 470 ft-lb of torque. Available first as a limited “Inaugural Edition” version, the SRT8 392 also incorporates significant suspension and steering enhancements, which increase the car’s lateral acceleration capability to 0.93 g’s, according to the company.

With all the recent excitement about the 2011 Dodge Charger, the company is taking advantage of the buzz by showcasing the 2011 RedLine Dodge Charger – a collaborative concept car put together by both Mopar engineers and the production car designers. This beast has been lowered an inch with suspension changes that also enhance handling. The car’s 5.7-liter HEMI engine is tweaked through the addition of headers, exhaust and cold air intake upgrades.

Taking the show theme to its max, the RedLine Charger rides on staggered 22-inch Super Alloy wheels, shod with Pirelli performance tires (265/35R22 front and 295/30R22 rear). Exterior enhancements start with a new, distinctive hood and carry on through custom designed carbon fiber front splitter and rear spoiler. As well, the car sports a unique side scoop inspired by that from the 1970 Dodge Charger R/T.

The car’s interior abounds with billet additions, along with Mopar Katzkin performance seats with red trim and stitching. The custom steering wheel includes prototype paddle shift controls for those dreaming of future options.

Mopar has been busy this year with their announcement of the limited edition 2011 Mopar Challenger and this all-black, fully accessorized version will be present in Las Vegas. The 2011 Mopar 10 Challenger is a limited production version of the production Challenger, fully accessorized by Mopar for enthusiasts. Available only in black with a choice of trim colors, the Mopar Challenger is expected to be an instant collectible car among Chrysler enthusiasts.

Mopar will also be showing the 2011 Challenger Drag Pack cars, with their V10 Viper power and race-only equipment setup. This is the the only factory-built V-10-powered race-ready drag car. The non-street legal Challenger 2011 Mopar V-10 Challenger Drag Pak is built with an 8.4-liter 512 cubic-inch engine with a 2-speed automatic transmission. Only 500 units will be built.

A total of 35 Chrysler vehicles will be on display at the 2010 SEMA Show, with an emphasis on their customization potential. Among the others are the 2011 Dodge Durango Citadel, a 2011 Wrangler Sahara Mopar Edition, the 2011 Jeep Street Cherokee, 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee Off-Road Edition and the Euro-spec Fiat 500. Check out the video for more detail on what’s new with these entrants.

Press Release:

Launching Off the Line: Dodge Challenger SRT8 392 Delivers New Levels of Performance With Loads More Torque, Horsepower and Maximum Handling

Dodge’s ultimate modern American muscle coupe, the Dodge Challenger SRT8 392, receives a big boost in horsepower and torque with the introduction of the legendary 392-cubic inch HEMI V8 powertrain for the street.

And the product story goes beyond the power rumbling under the hood.

Dodge performance loyalists asked for more power off the line, and the 2011 Dodge Challenger SRT8 392 answers the call with 470 horsepower and 470 lb.-ft. of torque. That’s 90 lb.-ft. more torque at 2,900 rpm compared with the previous 6.1-liter V-8 engine.

Building on its original mantra of a rear-drive coupe that delivers balance between form and function, the Dodge Challenger SRT8 392 also brings world-class ride and handling along with high-performance braking and the latest technology that delivers improved fuel efficiency.

New, highly damped shocks offer a firm ride that maintains the feel for everyday commuting while being fully capable for the more challenging situations. SRT engineers recalibrated the suspension geometry to improve Challenger’s balance, corning ability and steering responsiveness. Quicker steering ratios and new negative camber settings all around dramatically improve Challengers appetite for cornering.

The performance SRT-tuned, fully hydraulic steering system also has been improved with a new, heavy-duty pump and revised gearing to give drivers more direct feel and on-center response.

The result: the 2011 Challenger SRT8 392 is now more nimble and playfully “tossable” while still capable of an incredible .93g of lateral acceleration on the skid pad – the most of any production Challenger.

To kick off 2011-model year production, Dodge will build 1,492 Inaugural Edition models of the Challenger SRT8 392, all with exclusive content.

On the outside, Dodge is offering unique customization for those first 1,492 owners. Two colors and new full-body stripe combinations include Deep Water Blue with standard Stone White stripes or Bright White Clear Coat with standard Viper Blue stripes. All Inaugural Edition models will ride on standard 20-inch SRT-exclusive wheels that feature a polished face and satin black painted pockets.

Unique “392 HEMI” badges flank both fenders touting the historically significant V-8 engine. Mopar quad exhaust tips deliver the performance exhaust note while adding a serious muscle car styling cue. A larger front splitter and integrated front fender spats give this Challenger SRT8 392 better overall high-speed aerodynamics and balance.

A newly modified front fascia chin spoiler improves aerodynamics and is accent painted for a more aggressive look. The rear decklid spoiler also is completed in matching body color.

The race-inspired interior of the Challenger SRT8 392 Inaugural Edition features standard Smooth Pearl White leather-trimmed seats and dual blue stripes accented by unique blue stitching. Each of the front seats features an embroidered “392” just below the headrest. An exclusive, serialized “Inaugural Edition 392 HEMI” dash plaque, showing the sequential build number from 1 to 1,492, rounds out the exclusive interior content.

There’s a lot of history attached to the iconic 392 HEMI name.

The original 392 HEMI engine was introduced in 1957 model year Chrysler and Imperial products, replacing the 354 cubic-inch version of the original HEMI launched in 1951. The new and improved HEMI V-8 engine was quickly adopted by drag racers of all types, and following various historical speed runs on land and water, soon became affectionately referred to simply as the “92.”

After 1958, the 392 HEMI was gone as a production engine, but it still remains a legend. Collectors are now preserving many historic 392-powered race cars and hot rods and proudly displaying them on show car circuits.

In 2007, Mopar – Chrysler Group LLC’s service, parts and customer-care brand – helped celebrate the 50th anniversary of the original 392 by launching a modern, crate engine version of the 392 HEMI.

The 2011 Dodge Challenger SRT8 392 is built at the Brampton Assembly Plant in Brampton, Ontario, Canada, and will arrive in U.S. dealerships in the fourth quarter of 2010.

The Dodge Tent Event “Invisible Monkey” Video

Posted on: August 13, 2010 – 11:18 am by RLD

This is the updated “Invisible Monkey” video that was created in response to PETA

And yes, we know, chimpanzees aren’t monkeys. That was one of many facts we learned through the process of shooting our latest commercial for the Dodge Tent Event. The commercial features a young chimpanzee (Suzie) in a daredevil suit. She walks up to a detonator, pushes down the lever, and triggers a less-than-huge confetti explosion.

We posted the ad to YouTube, where it garnered thousands of hits and hundreds of comments applauding the commercial for its wit and humor. However, there were a few negative comments about animal cruelty that caught our eye. Next, we received two emails, one from PETA and the other from Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest. Both informed us about the poor conditions of working animal “actors.” They told us how these animals are usually separated from their mothers at a young age and are usually discarded at seedy roadside attractions after they get too old to act.

We were saddened to learn this, and in the spirit of Dodge we wanted to take action. We decided to take the spot off the air, and we stopped a full-page newspaper spread from running. Dodge is firmly committed to never using great apes in our advertisements again. We released a new commercial. The footage is identical, only this time you won’t see Suzie. There’s a twist you won’t miss. Make no mistake – we’re not making light of the issue. We hope our attempt at humor keeps the discussion about animal rights alive … and so far, it seems to be working. You’re here, aren’t you? And now, when people ask “Where’s the monkey?” we can direct them to resources where they can learn more about animal cruelty prevention.

We are not a company that hides behind issues or brushes them under the rug. We are a company that meets issues head on and moves forward. And we promise to keep doing everything in our power to be one of the most honest and forward-thinking companies out there.

Yours truly,

The Dodge Team
